Online portal of the Vatican Museums: content, services and mobile technologies

The Vatican Museums’ inmense artistic heritage is now open for the digital world in five different languages. The project includes more than 15,000 pages, 50 videos, virtual tours and the complete catalog of the works. Cultur-e designed and followed up every aspect in the creation of the new portal, for which digital media partner Inarea defined the brand identity guidelines.

Understanding that the current technology network landscape points to UX designed specially for mobile technologies, the project took upon building a new information architecture by the way of manual data migration, reorganization, translation and publication in five languages of an impressive number of documents and images, finishing up with a meticulous work of revision.

The imagery was upgraded with a photo shoot by Renato Cerisola, of which 150 new highly evocative images were selected and published. The project included the upgrading of the sections dedicated to visits, education material and visitor services; also for the first time the online public can access the research and restoration laboratories, the real pulsating soul of the Vatican Museums.

The team who oversaw the development of the Vatican Museums new portal has worked in close collaboration with the Multimedia Office and Web Site of the Vatican Museums and the Vatican Secretariat of Internet Services for Communications of the Holy See, which followed up the development process and technological implementation of the new platform.
